Location
Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre mountains along the coast of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, Playa el Mojon neighbors Huatulco and is in the center of surfing paradise.
Explore Oaxaca’s perfect peeling points in the area between Huatulco and the Western points of Salina Cruz with our private daily surf guiding. In this area, there are approximately 8 right point-breaks. 5 of these well-known waves are easy to score with most South swells. 2 of these waves are within walking distance of the resort. Some waves require more specific conditions, are not well-known to most, and are impressive in the peak season.
To the East ~2.5 hours is Salina Cruz, a well-known surf destination. To the West ~2 hours is Puerto Escondido (and its world-famous “Mexican Pipeline” beach break). We are a short 20 minute drive from Barra de la Cruz, the most well-known wave in the Huatulco region.
Playa el Mojon is a small off-grid beach community located an easy 30 minutes from the Huatulco International Airport and from the nearby resort town of Huatulco.
The Waves
There is something for every surfer from beginner to advanced on this magical coast. For our beginner / intermediate surfers, there are long, mellow waves with relatively forgiving takeoffs. These waves are also great for family surf trips and children. We’ve also got easy access to world-class barrels for our advanced surfers in addition to relatively uncrowded waves, hidden gems, and everything in between. It’s important to take note of the surf seasons so you have the best chance to score what you’re seeking.
Swells can range between 2’-4’ and 6’-8’+. Due to geographic variations, there are options to ride smaller or larger waves during any given swell. For example, if the top spots are 6’-8'+, there are other spots that would be in a 3’-5’ range, allowing us the flexibility to cater to various levels of surfing ability. The right point break at Playa el Mojon is a short walking distance from the surf resort and guests can easily keep an eye on the wave from the comfort of the hotel.
Surf Season
The peak swell season is between March and October. The start and end of the season may generate smaller ground swells while the peak of the summer surf season, May - August more consistently bring strong Pacific ground swells and the resultant powerful waves.
While winter will not bring the strong, consistent ground swells we see during the summer, it can be a great time to visit for families or beginner / intermediate surfers. The spots are uncrowded and you can still score a smaller, off-season ground swell or the impressive local beach breaks. Or maybe you’re looking for more tranquil conditions to learn in. Winter trips will probably offer you more time to kick back, relax, and explore all the region has to offer. We can plan a bespoke itinerary for sightseeing with your local guide including visiting Huatulco’s famous bays, nearby beach towns, and Oaxaca’s famous coffee plantations.
